Greetings in Christ's name.
For the last two years, the Executive Committee of the Religious Alliance Against Pornography (RAAP) has engaged in discussions regarding the troublesome decision of corporate giants like AT&T and others to distribute pornography - especially the Hot Network, which features hard-core pornography. Despite a series of face-to-face meetings with leaders of these corporations, as well as various attempts on the part of high-level religious leaders, AT&T and others are adamant in their refusal to get rid of this potentially prosecutable material.
I serve on the RAAP Executive Committee, and we are convinced that we must take a different approach. Our aim is to make Attorney General John Ashcroft aware of the particularly egregious nature of the pornographic material offered via cable and satellite TV outlets and to support and encourage him to strongly enforce the laws of the land as they relate to obscenity. Early in his tenure, Attorney General Ashcroft met with RAAP leaders and listened carefully to our request that he prosecute illegal pornography. We are now demonstrating that we not only fully support his efforts but also bring considerable numbers of concerned citizens with us.
Our plan involves two phases of action. First, we are asking religious leaders to exercise their moral and spiritual authority by sending a letter of encouragement to the Attorney General. We ask that the letter be written personally and include the following points:
- Express support and encouragement for Mr. Ashcroft to prosecute all obscenity.
- State that some of the pornography is indeed prosecutable as obscenity.
- Call attention to the peril of allowing "white-collar pornographers" to peddle pornography, thus making it more socially acceptable.
- Make clear that your moral authority and standing with your constituency is significant.
- State your intention to call on your constituency to sign petitions of support.
Because of the urgent nature of this campaign, we ask that all letters be sent to the RAAP office at 800 Compton Road, Suite 9224, Cincinnati, OH 45231 no later than December 2. The letters will be hand-delivered by RAAP Executive Committee leaders in early December.
Second, we are launching a nationwide effort to motivate citizens to sign a petition encouraging Mr. Ashcroft to prosecute obscenity. This petition drive is currently underway, but it will be visibly launched at a press conference when the letters are hand-delivered to the Attorney General.
I would appreciate your writing a letter to Attorney General John Ashcroft immediately, based on the facts in this letter. I also encourage you to enlist your pastor and church in the petition drive.
I am grateful for your commitment to this important work.
